It is important to remember that the legal system is just that, a system run by people. With fifteen years experience, I have learned most of the strengths and weaknesses of my opponents and what it is the judges want to see and hear. Knowing the system as I do, while maintaining my independence from it, continues to prove to be invaluable in obtaining the best results for my clients.
Criminal Defense/Traffic -
Experience is crucial for an attorney who represents persons in criminal or traffic cases - perhaps more than any other area of law. Your freedom cannot be replaced. I have represented hundreds of adult and juvenile clients on charges ranging from assault to drug possession/distribution to rape to first degree murder. Sometimes a case can be quietly worked out behind the scenes and sometimes a full-fledged jury trial is required. The goal is to win. How you get there is unique to each client.
I know most of the prosecutors and judges in the area. I have a healthy rapport with most prosecutors and, more importantly, a friendly, professional relationship with most judges. Knowing the right people is often helpful in getting a better result for my client.
Family Law -
In Virginia, a divorce may be sought on contested or uncontested grounds. There are numerous issues which may arise including distribution of marital property, custody, visitation, and support. I will work with you to provide guidance and counsel during this especially difficult time in your life. Finally, I have a friendly and professional relationship with most judges which is often helpful in getting a better result for my clients.
There are many myths surrounding the lemon law and other consumer issues. There is only one case from the Virginia Supreme Court on the lemon law which remains misunderstood despite the Court's ruling for the consumer. I have effectively represented clients against most automobile manufacturers throughout Virginia. Furthermore, most attorneys know I will take a case to a jury if a fair and reasonable settlement cannot be reached.
Employment -
Virginia is an employment at-will state. This gives employers great latitude in hiring or firing. However, you cannot be terminated on the basis of your race, sex, age, religion, national origin, disability, workers' compensation claim, pregnancy, marital status, maternity/paternity leave, whistleblowing, or medical leave. Different state and federal laws apply to different classes of employees and employers. It is crucial to take the appropriate steps to understand which law applies to you and protect your rights.
